Fourth Global International Studies Conference 2014 - Call for Hosts

The World International Studies Committee (WISC) is seeking a host association and institution for the Fourth Global International Studies Conference to be held in 2014. The previous hosts were the Turkish Political Science Association (SITD) and Istanbul Bilgi University (2005), the Central and East European International Studies Association (CEEISA) and the University of Ljubljana, Faculty of Social Sciences (2008) and the current hosts are the Portuguese Association of the History of International Relations (APHRI) and the University of Porto (2011).

The hosts have two principal functions. The first is to provide the local facilities for the Conference of 2014. The second is to provide the Executive Secretary of WISC for the period 2014 – 2017. The hosts are not responsible for the Program or for the Registration process although they are expected to facilitate such processes where so requested.

Further information

Timing:
Northern summer within the period June - September 2011.
Executive Secretary:
The WISC member association is responsible for nominating an individual who will act as Executive Secretary of the WISC until the Conference in 2017. This is not an onerous task since the preparations for the 2017 Conference will be largely the responsibility of the host association and institution for 2011 – 2014. The position consists mainly of preparing and chairing the annual meetings of WISC and ensuring that its decisions are implemented. The individual should be a senior figure with good international connections.
The location:
Previous conferences have been in places which have good international travel connections, which are attractive and in which there is a committed and well-connected local institution. For the first three conferences, the meetings have been (will be) held on a University campus but this is not a requirement. What is necessary, since the Conference is self-funding, is a reasonable assurance of a minimum of 450 full fee paying participants drawn from all corners of the globe.
Local organization:
This involves finding a suitable location, local hotels, receptions and sponsorship, high profile local speakers, touristic possibilities and the like. We are particularly interested to know of the extent to which the local organizers think they will be able to raise support funding for scholars from the developing countries. The local organizers are members of the Conference Committee but they are NOT responsible for the major tasks of Program Chairperson nor for registration.

Making an application:
The WISC Committee meets on a yearly basis (the next meeting is scheduled for the ISA Annual Convention 16-19 March 2011, Montreal, Quebec, Canada). The Committee would like to consider detailed applications then. It is desirable that a representative of the host association/institution be present to explain the proposal and answer questions. Prior to that or immediately thereafter the Executive Secretary or a Committee member will make a site visit. The final decision will presumably be made at the Porto conference 17–20 August 2011.
