About Slovenia

The amazing diversity of Slovenia, the green heart of Europe tucked away between mountainous Austria and Italy, the plains of Hungary, and the warm Adriatic Sea, always astonishes first-time visitors. Slovenia is among the greenest countries in Europe and with the largest share of forests on the Continent. Its moderate climate gives it a Mediterranean flavour in the coastal region, whereas at the same time, the Alps invite with a slightly cooler climate. A mere two-hour drive separates the rugged mountain peaks from the alluring waters of the sunny Adriatic and the excellent cuisine and wines of Slovenia's coastal region

Plentiful opportunities for exploring are offered by the unspoiled karst world of plateaus, disappearing lakes and rivers that stretches from the high Alps to the warm Adriatic Sea. There are more than one hundred subterranean caves open to the public in Slovenia, ranging from the world-renowned Postojna and Škocjan caves to less accessible caves you can explore in the company of experienced local guides. Along with the wines produced under the influence of the Mediterranean climate, Slovenia is also renowned for its wines from the hills of the Brda, Posavje, and Podravje winegrowing regions. Slovenia has many thermal and mineral springs - natural health resorts where families, businessmen, patients, and those who enjoy active holidays can recuperate and regain their strength and energy.

Some attractive destinations are in the vicinity: Trieste (96 km / 60 miles), Venice (250 km / 155 miles); the long Croatian coast, starting in Istria (100 km / 60 miles). Some famous capitals are within reach: Vienna (380 km / 236 miles), Budapest (484 km / 300 miles), Belgrade (535 km / 332 miles) and Sarajevo (577 km / 358 miles).

The history and identity of the Slovene people is closely linked to the Slovene language. Spoken by only two million people, it has preserved numerous peculiarities and fosters a lively cultural life that is reflected in the architecture of cities and in the many cultural events that always enchant visitors. Let us not forget its historical landmarks, such as Isonzo/Soca where one of the last major battles took place during the First World War (only 100 km / 62 miles from Ljubljana). It inspired Ernest Hemingway to write his masterpiece "Farewell to Arms".

A tip: In the summer, with a little bit of luck, you can ski in the morning and enjoy the sunny afternoon at the coast – all within the range of 100 kilometres (60 miles).
